More on African American Heritage
For hundreds of years, people in Africa were bought and sold by colonial merchants and transported as cargo to North America. This journey endured by millions of Africans is one of largest migrations in history, as well as one of the greatest crimes. For those who survived the journey, life in North America was a life in chains. Early African American's toiled for the bread that would eaten by others and were often denied even the comfort of suffering together. And if that wasn't bad enough their families were often broken up when a child or spouse was sold. Yet despite these horrible assaults the children of Africa persevered. They kept the faith and believed that the freedom that God intended for all would one day be theirs. They believed that across space and time, that faith would be redeemed. In America, their first real hope of freedom came on in 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. But still various heroes of the civil rights movement struggle for freedom and because of their courage, they changed laws. African Americans today are seizing opportunities they gained at great price, and they're making a difference and leaving their mark in America in countless ways. You see their character and achievement in the neighbourhoods across our nation. Some famous African-Americans: Martin Luther King Jr, famous leader of the American civil rights movement, Malcolm X, one of the most prominent black nationalist leaders and human rights activists, Madam C. J. Walker, a pioneer in the hair care industry; Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist; George Washington Carver, an agricultural chemist, Booker T. Washington, educator and founder of Tuskagee University; Opera Winfrey, a talk show host and one of the richest women in the US.
